Four Little Children's Songs

scored for voice and piano

duration 7 minutes

Four Little Children’s Songs begins from an apparent simplicity, yet opens an inner world in which wonder and imagination take center stage. The music I wrote is poetic in nature and seeks to remain close to a child’s way of experiencing the world.

Schrijf in het zand places impermanence at the forefront. Waarom ik altijd nee zeg focuses on stubbornness as an initial form of autonomy. In Wachten, time slows down. Het donker is een wonder approaches the night as a space where imagination and comfort meet.

Together, the songs do not form a narrative, but a series of states. The music suggests rather than names. The songs belong to a larger whole: six composers—David Anne, Mathias Coppens, Sam Gevers, Diederik Glorieux, Frederik Neyrinck, and Michaël Vancraeynest—set out from a shared point of departure and each set several poems from Frank Adam’s collection to music. What emerges is not a uniform cycle, but a multiplicity of perspectives on the same literary universe.
