Insta Songs emerged from a chance encounter in Los Angeles, where the path of Laurence Servaes and my own crossed. What followed was an unexpected and intense collaboration. We performed in the homes of film composers, beneath the palm trees, far removed from the traditional setting of the European art song.

 

Laurence wrote short, incisive poems that she shared on Instagram, fragments of thoughts, feelings, and observations, direct and unfiltered. She sent me these texts, and over the course of one stormy weekend I composed day and night. A few days later, the cycle was complete.

 

The Insta Songs connect the European art-song tradition with the rhythm of social media. The result is a musical snapshot: created quickly yet precisely shaped, as if these songs had always existed and only needed to be written at exactly the right moment.

Insta Songs is dedicated to Laurence Servaes and was first performed on November 12, 2020 in intimate setting in Venice, California. Laurence and Mathias recorded the songs in 2023 and are released on all streaming platforms.
