In an Apollonian Way
scored for sax and piano
duration 18 minutes
In an Apollonian Way sets out from Apollo as a symbol of the human pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. At the foundation of this cycle lies lyricism: the singing human being as the first and most direct expression of the good. From this original musical impulse, variations unfold, each illuminating that core idea from a different perspective. The work seeks to remind us how easily we slip into cynicism. We should never forget our belief in the natural goodness of humankind, even if it may seem a naïve narrative. Only such unguarded trust and a childlike sense of wonder can sustain us.
In About Lyricism, the Apollonian origin is heard most explicitly. About the Young Spirit of Idealism departs from singing as an open attitude toward the world, a trust not yet curtailed by experience. About Sensuality reveals how this lyricism can also give voice to desire.
With About Confidence and Clarity, the lyrical impulse is ordered and directed: rhythm emerges as a vital motor of life. In a Still, Serene Way slows this movement and brings the singing back to an almost meditative state, as if touching the source from which this sense of the good has sprung. In Structural Solitude, the music becomes existential; we reach the structural low point of the work.
Passion in Proportion shows how intensity can arise within a controlled framework. In About Pulsating Precision, the rhythmic engine takes precedence; pulsating precision carries the musical structure. In a Cool, Concise Way introduces a reference to a contemporary form of jazz. Here, rhythmic precision translates into a felt groove: a good performance is not only a reasoned one.
In About Trust in a Transcendental Truth, confidence in the original Apollonian source becomes explicit: the conviction that the singing gesture can transcend the individual. About Purity of Heart concludes with a return to simplicity, where the music once again comes close to its lyrical origin.
